Sore Throat

A sore throat is a common condition that causes pain, irritation, or discomfort in the throat, particularly when swallowing. It is often caused by viral infections such as the common cold or flu, but can also result from bacterial infections, allergies, dry air, or irritation from smoke and pollutants.

Most sore throats improve on their own within a few days. Through the Pharmacy First service, eligible patients may be able to receive assessment, advice, and treatment directly from a pharmacist without needing a GP appointment.

Common Symptoms of Sore Throat

Common symptoms of a sore throat may include:

Symptoms can vary depending on the cause and may range from mild irritation to more severe discomfort.

Treatment

Treatment for a sore throat focuses on relieving pain, reducing inflammation, and helping you feel more comfortable while your body recovers. Depending on your symptoms and clinical assessment, treatment may include pain relief medication, medicated lozenges, throat sprays, or other suitable remedies.

Our pharmacist will assess your symptoms and provide advice on the most appropriate treatment options, as well as self-care measures to help support recovery.

Who is at Risk?

Anyone can develop a sore throat, but it is particularly common in children, people who are frequently exposed to infections, and those with allergies or weakened immune systems. Individuals who smoke or are regularly exposed to irritants such as pollution may also be more likely to experience throat irritation and discomfort.

Close contact with people who have viral or bacterial infections can increase the risk of developing a sore throat.

Possible Complications

Most sore throats improve without causing any long-term problems. However, in some cases, complications can occur, particularly when a bacterial infection is left untreated. These may include the spread of infection to nearby tissues, the development of tonsillitis, or the formation of abscesses around the throat. Individuals who experience severe symptoms, difficulty swallowing, breathing problems, or symptoms that persist for an extended period should seek medical advice promptly.

Early assessment and appropriate treatment can help relieve symptoms, support recovery, and reduce the risk of complications.

A sore throat is usually a short-term condition that improves within a few days. If you are experiencing symptoms, our pharmacy team can provide expert advice and treatment through the Pharmacy First service.
