Earache

Earache is a common condition that we have surely all faced at some point. Whether it's severe, painful earache or simply mild and irritating. This condition is now covered by the free NHS Pharmacy First service.

Earache Symptoms

Ear pain will, in almost every case, be the main symptom. Accompanying symptoms will vary depending on what is causing your earache.

One obvious symptom to look out for is discharge from the ear, which can indicate an infection. This can be especially important for young children who may not be able to recognise an infection themselves. If you think your child has earache, book an appointment through the NHS Pharmacy First service.

Treatment

We offer various treatment options for earaches depending on the severity of the condition. For milder cases, simple solutions such as over-the-counter ear drops or home remedies, including applying a warm flannel to the affected ear, may help.

For more severe cases, more complex treatment may be required, including prescription medicines and antibiotics where appropriate. Our knowledgeable pharmacist will carry out a consultation to determine the underlying cause of your earache and recommend the most suitable treatment.

Causes

Earache can occur for a variety of reasons, including teething in young children. Excessive earwax build-up or a foreign object lodged in the ear may also contribute to ear pain.

Determining the exact cause of earache in a child can sometimes be difficult, so if your child is experiencing ear pain, it is best to consult the pharmacist at All Care Pharmacy for a proper assessment.

In adults, earache is generally not associated with teething and is often caused by an ear infection. These infections are commonly bacterial and can be extremely painful.

Dental issues, such as tooth infections or impacted wisdom teeth, may also cause ear pain because of their proximity to the ears. In such cases, dental symptoms may accompany the earache.

Complications

Earache itself is usually not a serious condition. Although it can be painful and inconvenient, the greatest concern is the complications that may result from untreated infections. Hearing problems are among the most significant complications. Perforated eardrums, ear infections and inflammation can all affect hearing. Complications may range from tinnitus (ringing in the ears) to partial or complete hearing loss, although this is fortunately uncommon.

The NHS Pharmacy First service aims to help prevent these complications by providing fast access to professional support and advice.

There is no doubt that earache is a common health condition, but it is often overlooked, with people focusing only on treating the pain rather than addressing the underlying cause. While this may sometimes be sufficient, earache can also be a sign of more serious ear problems.

For example, untreated infections can potentially lead to permanent hearing loss. This is why it is important not to ignore the symptoms of earache. In most cases, complications can be avoided simply by speaking to the pharmacist at All Care Pharmacy, who can provide treatment or arrange referrals where necessary.

Thanks to the NHS Pharmacy First service, excellent healthcare is now more accessible and convenient than ever.
