Hajj & Umrah Meningitis Vaccination
Travelling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah is a deeply meaningful journey. As part of the Saudi entry requirements, many pilgrims must receive a valid meningococcal (ACWY) vaccination before travelling. At our clinic, we provide MenACWY vaccination for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, ensuring you meet the vaccination requirements while protecting yourself against meningococcal disease.
Meningococcal disease is a rare but serious bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis. It can lead to severe illnesses such as meningitis (infection of the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord) and bloodstream infections (septicaemia).
Symptoms can develop rapidly and may become life-threatening without prompt medical treatment. Vaccination is the most effective way to reduce the risk of infection.
Millions of people from around the world gather in Saudi Arabia each year for Hajj and Umrah. Large crowds and close contact between pilgrims increase the risk of spreading infectious diseases, including meningococcal disease.
To help protect pilgrims and public health, the Saudi authorities require eligible travellers to receive a quadrivalent MenACWY vaccine before entering the country.

To help your appointment run smoothly, please note the following:
Please bring your passport (either the physical passport or a clear photo of the identification page). We will need to copy your full name and passport number onto your International Certificate of Vaccination.
If you require a female vaccinator, please let us know when booking your appointment so we can make the necessary arrangements.
Please wear loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to your upper arm for vaccine administration.
With your consent, details of your vaccination will be shared with your GP to ensure your medical records remain up to date. If you do not wish for this information to be shared, please let the pharmacist know before your vaccination.
We look forward to helping you prepare for a safe and healthy Hajj or Umrah pilgrimage.

Two types of vaccine are available. They are:
It’s important to make sure that the name of the vaccine given is clearly recorded on your vaccination certificate.
Certificates which state that a conjugate vaccine was received are valid for five years. Certificates which don’t state the name of the vaccine received, or which state that a polysaccharide vaccine was received, are only valid for travel three years after the date of immunisation.
Three conjugate MenACWY vaccines are available in the UK:
Polysaccharide MenACWY vaccines are no longer available in the UK, but are available in some other countries.
If you live outside of the UK, check with your healthcare provider to find which MenACWY vaccines are available to you.

Yes, the vaccines are safe. The ingredients of the three conjugate vaccines available in the UK have been in use for many years. Both Menveo® and Nimenrix® have been used as travel vaccines, and have routinely been used in the UK as teenage immunisations.
You may experience minor side effects following vaccination. These symptoms are usually mild and go away on their own within a few days. They may include:
