Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common infection that can affect the bladder, urethra, or other parts of the urinary system. UTIs occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract and multiply, leading to symptoms such as pain, discomfort, and changes in urination.

UTIs are particularly common in women, but they can affect people of all ages. Through the Pharmacy First service, eligible patients may be able to receive assessment, advice, and treatment directly from a pharmacist without needing a GP appointment.

Common Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

Common symptoms of a urinary tract infection may include:

Symptoms can vary from person to person and may range from mild to more severe discomfort.

Treatment

Treatment for a urinary tract infection focuses on relieving symptoms, clearing the infection, and preventing complications. Depending on your symptoms and eligibility, a pharmacist may be able to provide appropriate treatment through the Pharmacy First service.

In addition to treatment, drinking plenty of fluids and maintaining good hydration may help support recovery. Our pharmacist will assess your symptoms, discuss your medical history, and recommend the most appropriate treatment and self-care advice based on your individual needs.

Who is at Risk?

Anyone can develop a urinary tract infection, but certain factors can increase the risk. Women are more likely to experience UTIs due to the structure of the urinary tract. Other risk factors include previous UTIs, pregnancy, diabetes, urinary tract abnormalities, and conditions that make it difficult to completely empty the bladder.

People with weakened immune systems and older adults may also be more susceptible to urinary tract infections.

Possible Complications

Most urinary tract infections improve quickly with appropriate treatment and do not cause long-term problems. However, if left untreated, the infection can spread to the kidneys and lead to more serious health concerns. Recurrent infections may also occur in some individuals and can require further medical assessment.

Symptoms such as fever, chills, pain in the sides or back, nausea, or vomiting may indicate a more serious infection and should be assessed promptly. Seeking professional advice early can help ensure effective treatment and reduce the risk of complications.

Urinary tract infections are common and can often be treated successfully when identified early. If you are experiencing symptoms of a UTI, speak to our pharmacy team for expert advice and support through the Pharmacy First service.
